Being pressured to come into a job while COVID cases are only increasing in my state. What can I do?
So here's the story: I interviewed for a job on March 6th, and was hired with a tentative start date of April 6th. And obviously things started shutting down. It's a tutoring position at a residential school for teenagers. But they consider everyone who works there essential. I've tried to delay it as long as I can because our governor still has stay at home orders, and I told them I'm worried about my parents in their 60s. And it's not like my state has a minimal amount of cases.
They called me on the phone today and said I have to decide tomorrow if I'm going to start mid-June, or they're rescinding the position and going to try to find someone else. They will always be open no matter what. I tried telling them that doesn't it make sense to have as few people in the building as possible? What if things are even worse in June? Is there anything I can do remotely? I've tried everything.
I really want this job, but I'm feeling pressured to come in when I don't think it's safe. I also told them my concerns about infecting anyone else because anyone can be an asymptomatic carrier, but they said they could not issue a test for me before I came in (you can only get one if you have severe symptoms). It's twice the salary I've ever had, and is the only good offer I've had in a long time, and I've been without a full-time job for a year now. It pays enough money where I'd actually be able to afford my own house. Is there anything I can do?
