Seeking Advice: senior engineer bout to negotiate on FAANG job offer (xpost /r/recruiting)

Roughly 10 years of experience in FAANG level and recently was looking around as I am underpaid currently for my level. I'm not straight software (SW). Rather I have a pretty good blend of both hardware (HW) and software skills, with leaning more towards HW. I've gone through all the rounds of interviews for one FAANG company_X and I can tell they want me pretty bad because of my HW abilities. The SW aspects of the position I would definitely need some ramp time and training once I get the position, but they don't seem concerned about it.

I've also been recently rejected by other FAANG companies, but one may still yet come through with an offer, though I don't want to take it because I didn't like the team. So I really don't have much leverage, and actually really want the job as I think it'd be interesting, but don't want to be low balled as I come in since I know promos will be much harder to come by once in the company.

Recruiter from FAANG company_X has given me a "verbal offer" that they want me to join, but no numbers. We're going to duke it out next week over the phone. I'm thinking a written offer will only come after we verbally spar on numbers over the phone and this seems typical of some FAANG companies. They only will give a written offer once you both settle on some numbers.

So far I've refused to give information to the HR recruiter on what salary I am expecting, what my current salary is, who else I've been interviewing with, and if I have any hard competing offers. He has so far refused to even name the salary range for the position to me. Some of these topics will probably come out in our phone call next week.

I actually have the actual hiring manager's number directly and have been texting with him. He's excited to bring me on board, but understand's the debate needed.

To give an idea, the level of the position is like:

  • Google : L4, L5
  • Microsoft : L63, L64
  • Amazon : L5, L6

Websites like Glassdoor, levels.fyi, and posts from Reddit will target compensation in these levels in pretty wide ranges (especially for stock) like below:

  • Base : 150 - 190K
  • RSUs/stock : 40 - 175K (vesting over 4 years)
  • Signing Bonus : 25 - 50K
  • Perf Bonus : 0-30% per year (30% is not realistic though)

Based on these ranges, I am not sure what I could get, and how much I could push it before I piss off the HR recruiter and the offer rescinded. I know they would have constraints based on company budget, so I'm not going to ask something ludicrous like 400K base like I'm some complete rockstar.

I've researched a lot on the web and advice I've seen so far is:

  • Base is usually the hardest to negotiate. Would have an easier time to negotiate stock/signing bonus.
  • Don't make up that you have a written competing offer.
  • Whoever names a number first "loses".

Any other advice people can offer that can help? The company is in a position of strength, but my gut senses some desperation on their part as well.
