So I'm currently employed at a retail job in California. I've been treated well, the pay was good, managers were cool, health/vision/dental benefits, good benefits in general, great location, and coworkers were amazing. I have nothing but good things to say. My plan was to continue this job to have a stable income and eventually start looking at entry-level opportunities in media or marketing in the summer.
Then this pandemic happened. They gave us two weeks of paid leave which recently turned into three weeks of paid leave. Recently found out that after those three weeks, they can't offer any more pay. The outlook for this pandemic doesn't look good anytime soon. I'm 27 and this is my first paid job, so I never filed taxes before. I haven't done it for 2019, which is when I started my job. So I don't think I'll be able to take advantage of the stimulus package that passed recently.
I don't know about how to proceed with unemployment. I don't have a car, so that limits me. I live in my family's place with a bunch of older people, so I don't know if I should risk applying for groceries. But for now, it seems like my outlook for income is looking really low. I don't know if we're getting laid off or just putting us in a holding pattern. I got emergency savings that can last me for a month, but I figured instead of letting that dry, I should figure out what the next best steps are for preparation.
