Should I bring up past videogame addiction as a reason for an employment gap and getting back on course at 25?
tl;dr: Former videogame addict, 2013 hs grad then college drop out, now back on track working on bachelors. Is it worth telling an employer I struggled with addiction to explain the gap in my history?
I (25M) am currently back in school. I graduated high school in 2013, went to a technical college not knowing what I wanted to do. Dabbled and struggled with videogame addiction during this time period. Worked odd jobs and was heavily depressed. Eventually I somewhat started finding myself and figuring things out, got an AAS in 2016. I have been working in 2016 as a tutor and then at a credit union getting promoted to 2 roles since then. I quit that job though so I could return to school to get a BS in Comp Sci, est grad 2021.
The thing I'm concerned about is whether or not I should bring this up in an interview? I know not to go into detail, but should I bring it up at all? I don't feel like I have some sort of complex as though it's part of my identity, just hindsight I realize that it is what it is. I feel like it's a legitimate thing to say I've got my head on straight, however I do realize some people look at videogame addiction as though it's not a legitimate illness. I mean if an employer is overtly curious and asks what I've been doing since high school, should I mention I struggled with addiction and finding out what I wanted to do? Is that a legitimate thing? I have documentation on borderline everything I did to overcome these things and how I achieved/achieving them.
