Director of library has stage 4 cancer, retires in May, when is it a good time to switch jobs, advice
I(25f) was hired for a part time digitalization project at my local library. I co-run the archives with an older lady (68). I work 25 hours a week. I started in October, the funding should last a year (so fall 2020)
There is 13 of us working in the library. Our director has been sick for awhile but since I started had test run. She has stage 4 colon cancer and had surgery (2 weeks ago). I highly doubt she is coming back to work as she is officially retiring on June 1.
I love this job truly but everything concerning my actual job is frozen due to director surgery. The "IT head" has not submitted the application for our state to start putting this stuff online. So I spend my day, scanning and internally catalog the photos while holding off on the actual putting online part of the grant.
I am also in IT and am slowly starting to look into getting a full time job. I want to get a job before this project ends in case it takes longer than it should. I know fall is also a bad time to look for jobs so I was trying to think about this summer switch. Yet, I do not want to burn bridges here. I along with the rest of the staff is upset that director is seriously ill. Another possibility depending on the full time job is to for a few months is to work both (schedule wise, I could do this).
When is it best for me to start looking for a job. from anyone who has been through upper management having serious illness please.
