Hey everyone. I would be interested in any suggestions or thoughts you have regarding the situation I'm in.
I'm in VA and work as a contractor. My gross pay is around $48k with no benefits or annual increase. They offer limited medical benefits that are deducted from my pay but they only cover basic services and are pretty bad.
I like my current position but I started applying for other jobs to get a better salary and real benefits. I received a job offer for a position in CA. This position has a base pay in the low $70k range, with an annual increase and benefits (medical, vacation, pension, etc). Despite the higher COL in CA and financial costs of moving, I think I would eventually come out financially ahead and the move seems worth it.
I accepted the CA job a few days ago. Then the day after, I got an interview invite for another position I previously applied to. This one is in VA and would be with the same team I'm with now. The base pay range is in the upper $50k range (I would make around $10k more than my current position) and it has benefits, although the benefits aren't quite as good as the CA position.
One interesting thing is that the references I used for the CA position, will also be on the interview panel for the VA position(!). So they already know I've been applying to other jobs and that I received an offer, although I haven't sent my official resignation letter yet.
Reasons for interviewing for the VA job (and if I were to ultimately get it): VA is our home state and we like living here (I like the climate, easy commute, close to everything, etc), it would be tough to leave and as you know, change can be hard. Also, we would not have to deal with the stress and financial costs of a cross country move.
Reasons for keeping the CA job acceptance: Career would probably fare better in CA, where there seem to be more chances for promotion and moving up. In VA, it seems I would more likely hit a ceiling after a few years, in other words I don't know what would be the next step if I was able to get the VA position and work there for a few years. The move to CA would be tough but we may end up liking CA and it's a chance to live in a new place. However, if things didn't work out in CA for some reason, it would be difficult to move back.

Should I still interview for the VA position or is it better to withdraw if I think I'm leaning towards the CA one?
-
If I do the interview and receive an offer in VA, I would have a short time to decide which job to take. If I take the VA job, I would have to withdraw my offer acceptance with CA, which will mean burning a bridge, but in that scenario they hopefully would understand?

On the other hand, if I do proceed with the interview, that would give me a few more weeks to think about this, and assuming if I receive an offer from VA, I could still end up choosing CA in the end.
Thanks!
