What's a good amount of time to wait before losing patience with "approvals" for a verbal offer?

I'm 24 and this'll be my third job, but I've been at my current one for about 20 months and before that was with a pretty unorganized startup-y place with no HR department, so I lack experience in this front.

Anyway, I received verbal confirmation (woo!) from a job that I really am excited for and in an area that I would love living in. They told me last Friday that I'd be given my verbal offer on Monday/Tuesday this week (I guess this is so I can get my background check and stuff before signing up for anything). On Wednesday I sent an email asking for an update and was told:

I have to clear up some stuff with HR and Finance. Hopefully I can get the offer through soon. Just a bit of red tape. Thanks for being patient!

They've been extremely communicative with me though and I don't doubt the legitimacy of this at all, and I want to be patient. But I've never dealt with this before. What kind of stuff is going on behind the scenes that I'm unaware of that makes things take what feels like forever? I get the whole "you're just another work item even though they're your highest concern" but stopping thinking about it is easier said than done since I'm looking forward to the position.
