Let me start off by saying i don't mean to sound ungrateful and entitled. I enjoy my job and i appreciate the fact that i am doing something with my life and making money to buy things i need and want.
I work full-time at a consultancy firm, and have just started 6 months ago straight out of uni. My salary is 50k and i work 8.5 hours per day (inc. 30 min break). Sometimes i stay back if need be but a lot of other colleagues stay back for at least 30mins-1hr each day. I'm all for putting in the work and going above and beyond to help but i get paid for 38 hours and work 40 so i try and keep it at 40 per week.
What i don't understand is that people are so willing to stay back/work additional hours way beyond what they are paid. I get that in office jobs you have to be constantly going beyond the norm to stand out and move up but i don't live to work, i work to live and spend time with my family and friends and doing things i like.
I guess my questions are:
- Why are people so willing to give "free time" to their employer? Time is the most valuable resource we have, so why do people give it away like it doesn't matter?
- Is it fair to be contracted for 38 hours and immediately be expected to work 40 minimum? Why not just contract me for 40? It may be 'only' 2 hours a week, but over the year, that's a lot of time and money that i'm not being paid for.
- What is a reasonable expectation for staying back? I.e. how much of my time (that i'm not being paid for) should i give up.
Note: i get that i'm salaried and that's just part of life, but i just want to know other peoples thoughts.
Thanks!
