For a little over 7 years, I lived overseas and recently came back to the states to go to school and work. At first, I struggled to find a job outside of manual labor that paid well enough to live in my home city so I took the first non-manual labor position that I was offered after negotiating pay. During the interview process, I explained that I would need at least $20/hr and we came to an agreement that I would start out at $17/hr for a probationary period of 3 months. After the 3 months were up, I would get bumped up to the $20/hr that I had requested. At the 3 month mark, I brought up the negotiated pay raise with the person who hired me and they said that HR was aware and it was "in the works." Another month went by and I tried again and received the same statement. Eventually, I brought it up to the boss (it's a small location and the boss was the next higher person), explained the situation, what I was told, etc. The boss told me that they have never heard anything about my negotiated pay, nor that the company would ever agree to $20/hr for my position. It appears that my negotiated pay is not going to happen and I'm not entirely sure what to do next but I recognize that it is ultimately my fault for trusting in a person's word, as opposed to receiving a written statement regarding pay negotiation. Any advice regarding this situation is welcomed.
