Asking for my wife.
My wife works in the healthcare industry. She is currently working at Job A. She likes the work, the people, and especially the hours. She recently received a job offer at Job B for better pay and a sign-on bonus, but it would be longer/later hours and the work is more exhausting. We're in a situation where we could really use the extra money, so she decided to accept the job.
She talked to her current boss at Job A about it and they were sad to see her go, they appreciated her work there, but understood she needed to do what's best for the family, and my wife put in her two weeks notice.
Job B sends my wife her official job offer. She accepts the offer and starts the onboarding process, i.e. filling out tax forms, employee forms, etc. She also needs to get a fit for duty physical, which Job B arranges and covers. She hasn't officially started working yet. They want her to start asap.
Suddenly this evening, her old boss at Job A pulls her in and says that they really don't want to lose her. They can't offer a sign-on bonus, but to make up for that they are willing to pay her a higher wage, which will more than make up for the bonus over time and she'll be making more money in general. Additionally, she already likes the hours better there and the other employees and management.
My wife is now torn. She really appreciates Job B and their offer, but Job A is easily the best offer and her preference. Two main questions: 1) Is is appropriate to rescind her acceptance at Job B at this point? If so, how would you recommend approaching that. And 2) Is there any legal concerns or anything we should have seeing as they covered her fit for duty physical?
