How to execute job search when you’re already employed?

I have been wondering about this for a while, so I’m hoping people here will bestow on me the benefit of their experience in answering my question:

Scenario assumption: Already have a quality professional job in your chosen field.

Questions:

  • How do you schedule interviews with prospective employers? I imagine most wouldn’t use vacation/flex time in their current job to attend an interview, because if that ever came to light it could be catastrophic. Would you be best to schedule phone/Skype interviews outside of your working hours?

  • Do you just provide personal references? You presumably don’t want to tell your current/former managers at your firm that you are looking elsewhere, so it seems like it would be challenging to provide references who could verify the claims and quality of work stated on your resume.

I appreciate any clarity you can offer. I’m currently in my first job out of college and would like to leverage my current situation to test the market within the next year or two, but I am a bit deterred by these challenges, and could use your input.
