How to best explain past short employment with same company in interview?

TLDR at bottom.

I’m a nurse looking to get a position with a specialized local hospital (Hospital A). I have experience related to that specialty at a different hospital in the area (Hospital B).

I was also briefly employed (~6 months) at Hospital A roughly 4 years ago. At the time, the position I had was in a very unstable department. A manager and a supervisor turned over, as well as the educator for that specialty in the brief time I was employed. The staff turnover was also high, and relationships among staff were difficult. I had remained per diem at Hospital B, and decided to resume work there in a different unit—I was union and granted in by seniority since I met the qualifications.

Now I have interests in Hospital A, but a department very different than the one I was previously employed in. I never actually had a break in employment from Hospital B, so I would probably just leave Hospital A off my resume if it weren’t where I’m applying.

How can I best explain this to recruitment/supervisor? I feel like if I note the instability of the department I was hired into that won’t look good. There would be some truth in noting personal reasons but I’m not sure if that’s appropriate. Any advice or experience is appreciated! I’m trying to leave nurse language out of this to make sense, but I am happy to be more specific too.

TLDR: Worked at company 4 years ago for 6 months in an unstable department. Now applying at company in different department. Not sure how to explain it.
