Don't want to get references for one job until I hear back from another. What should I say?

So the low paying job is just temporary for me until I get back into school. I have had multiple other interviews that have not asked me for references, with one that I am especially looking at that has 2 positions open and seem to be extremely interested in me (already went through the interview). It seems that they will offer me the job as soon as they checked the references, but I am worried about bothering my references. If it was something major (school admission, extremely high paying job) I would pull out all the stops and hit up everyone I can, but the job is more of a "meh". I have worked in several same positions (none of which have asked for multiple references btw) over the years, so I have plenty of experience that I don't really need the job anymore for school and am working more for money at this point.

Right now I am thinking about telling them that I would like to hear back from another position that I am more interested in before I have to start contacting my references and that I will keep them up to date. What do you guys think? Am I shooting myself in the foot on the chances for this position?
