Expired passport proof for employment UK??

A lot of people tell me your can use an expired passport to give to employer for proof/eligible to work in the UK. I had an interview at an Heathrow airport and I didn't get the job because of my expired passport. But the interviewer told me it's only because airports are extra strict and that high Street shops will accept an expired passport. Is this true????
