I was hired to a 2 yr contract position 2 months ago and want to leave it for a better job. If I explain to potential employers that I'm leaving a contract early, will they still expect some reference/verification from my current employer?

I don't like this job and although it's not helping me much with building useful skills, it's still better to have production support on my resume than an unemployment gap.

But will potential employers still expect a reference when I obviously can't tell my current employer I'm looking for another job? And will they contact my current employer to verify that I work here, either directly or through a background check?
