Long story short, my grandma was dying so I asked for time off to drive across the country and be with my family, help my mom take care of my grandma, etc. I asked for a few weeks off and was given six. My boss asked me to complete some work before I officially stopped working, but I had the blessing to leave and work remotely.
She died the very next day before I even left. I left the 19th of July. I drove over there (3 day drive) with my fiance. Got there the 22nd. I had to help my mom plan the funeral, plus, you know, I was grieving. I couldn't concentrate and I was busy and said I wouldn't be able to get the work done. Boss said if I didn't get it done by the 25th, I was fired. I said I'd see what I could do.
Wasn't able to get the work done (probably 8+ hours worth of work) and got fired three days before my grandma's funeral. So in addition to losing her, I lost the job that I'd been at for four years. It just really sucks.
They're a very small company, so not subject to FMLA regulations. And I take responsibility for my part in not finishing work I said I would do. I just wish my former employer would have been a little more understanding... But the company was restructuring in a way and I think it was just an excuse to get rid of me and eliminate my position.
I'm still heartbroken over it because I thought this guy cared about me, he invited me to his wedding for God's sake, but I guess I was just a replaceable cog.
