Had to leave job to clean up... didn’t get paid

My job is working with children (paid hourly) at the center’s location and one of my clients had a messy accident. I had to go home and clean up and return to work, but HR says that they won’t pay me for the hour I had to excuse myself for. Does this make sense and should I fight it?
