Need some advice: Have an offer for a smaller company that pertains to my wanted career path vs a fortune 6 entity with better benefits but terrible boss and career path I didn't study for
I have an offer from a company for a FT hourly position that actually uses my degree and is what I want to do: graphic & web design. It's a little further away from my current job and the travel will suck - I'm not even sure if the 8k increase is enough for the stress of that drive...
But I HATE my current work place. The nepotism is absurd: the upper management consists of all family members who aren't qualified for their positions. The CEO's wife was put into a VP position right before the buyout was announced. They also use this situation to abuse and harass workers when they want things done immediately or illegally. That being said, they pay pretty well and that's the only reason why I've stayed, even though the position doesn't really help me as a marketing rep doing administrative work, with 15% of that time being design related.
And, TBH, I was hired FT salary because of being a contractor and working with the CEO's wife during my undergrad. She also holds this above my head quite often that she's the reason I'm there.
So, the reason why I'm still considering this place is because my current work place is being bought out by a multibillion dollar, national organization.. with an actual HR and hierarchy. This org is honestly really difficult to get a position with for marketing/advertising in my area (they're located in CA, whereas I'm in NJ). The benefits are also killer and will allow me to pursue a masters with the tuition reimbursements, which may lead me to an even stronger career path in the future.
But I don't know if I can handle working with this team anymore. I'm getting calls and texts in the middle of the night to do honestly easy and quick tasks for the VP(who can't be bothered to learn how to use a program like excel) and then getting angry calls because I'm not near a work computer.
I don't think things will change that much after the acquisition either. I'll still be stuck right under this crazy & incompetent woman for atleast 6 months.
So my question is, what is the most logical path to choose here? Accept the position that does only design work (like I'd like) at the smaller company with not much career advancement and a stressful drive, or try to stick it out with my current position that leads down a marketing path with a huge, fortune 6 company and be depressed?
