How to follow up email after meeting someone at a university career fair and receiving an interview invitation?

I talked to an engineer in a similar role that I am applying for at a career fair (I would be doing the internship version of his role). I had a really good conversation with him at the career fair, and later I received an invitation to interview with the company (through a hiring manager). I want to send a thank you email about his referral (I submitted my resume through him), but would it be ok to ask about tips about standing out in the interview process? Or should I keep it to asking more about the company & his experience?
