I’ve come to a weird job crossroads. I’ve been unemployed for 3 months now, and I’m extremely eager to get back into working. I work in film in Vancouver, so contracts are the norm. Which is fine, but this leaves me with gaps wondering where my next contract is coming from and how my bills will be paid.
Enter Job 1. I had an interview here and I loved the atmosphere. The commute is about 30 minutes, parking is included, the job sounds like it fits my skills. It’s a 9am-5pm gig with an hour long lunch. It’s also full time permanent with benefits and a retirement matching plan after 3 months.
Enter Job 2. I had an hour long interview, and I felt good and confident that I could do the job. However, the commute is just over an hour, parking is $145/month (it’s downtown), and the hours are 9am-6pm with an hour break. However, it’s a start-up with the potential for lots of growth. This is a contract until the end of May.
I received a job offer from Job 2 almost right as I left the interview. They gave me the salary I wanted and everything, which is amazing. I followed up with Job 1 as they were my first preference, but I didn’t hear back after 3 days. My job offer was expiring with Job 2, so I signed the contract as a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Or whatevah.
Today, Job 1 called me in for a last minute interview, and it went extremely well. I start Job 2 on Monday, and I’m really stressed out that Job 1 is going to send me a job offer that I won’t want to turn down. I can’t believe I’ve been unemployed for 3 months and now I get hit with two huge opportunities..
So... my question is: if Job 1 offers me a job offer, how do I quit Job 2 if I just started? I don’t want to burn any bridges, but it would be so hard to give up a permanent full time gig. Or do I stick with Job 2 as I’ve already signed my contract? (In the contract, it says you can leave at any time, but 2 weeks notice is preferred).
