Reference check early in interview process?

So I'be interviewing lately and I've had about 75% of positions ask to 'check' my references early in the process. In 3 cases, they asked to talk to my references prior to inviting me for an in-person interview. In 1 case, it was after a brief in-person interview but they were still interviewing other candidates. In 1 case, they proceeded to somehow track down my prior supervisors after a video interview, without telling me they'd be checking my references (no idea how, I had not shared the names yet).

I've interviewed for tons of jobs before and I've never been asked to have my references checked so early. These are not real reference checks, they are basically looking to interrogate your prior co-workers to make a decision about whether to continue interviewing you.

My reaction up to now has been to provide the references but politely ask that they are not contacted until we are getting closer to an offer being made out of consideration for my references time. The reaction to that has been that the employers decided against interviewing me further and no offers or further interviews were done.

I'm starting to think I just have to give into this new etiquette if i want a job.

Any similar stories? How common is this practice?
