So, about 5-6 weeks ago I interviewed for a similar position to my current one. I am in a team lead role of a department with about 15 employees. The role I applied for ended with "technician" and the role they offered ended with "specialist", which is the next step up. There is 1 other specialist and 3 or 4 technicians. The pay is $50,000 exempt with 10% bonus paid quarterly. so 55k total. Currently I'm at $45k non-exempt, and with a 12% bonus. We used to get a lot of overtime here but not lately. My W2 said I made $59k in 2018. I've been here for 2 years and started at 33k and gotten 1 promotion.
However...just today, the same day as my job offer, my boss had a meeting with me. She said my position/title is transitioning to a new title due to restructuring, and will now have "Technical Lead" in the title rather than my current "Sr. Technician" title. She also said she has some concerns regarding my leadership skills and whether or not I can handle the additional responsibilities. This is due to complaints from some of my current team members about my tone of voice and the fact that I sound like a know it all when answering questions. Shocking news to me, because I'm pretty fuckin humble and chill. She said if I am not ready for that position by the time it rolls out, it would mean a demotion. I didn't ask if that would involve a pay cut because I was a little too blindsided. I have had multiple team members say that I am a good lead, and that they prefer going to me with questions since the other lead rarely knows the answer, and they think she's harsh.
Anyway, I'm totally open to criticism. I love it. But hearing the word "demotion" after 2 years of hard work has me seriously concerned, and she could tell I was concerned. We have typically had a good relationship, she got promoted to Supervisor from Sr. Tech role about 6 months after I started, so for awhile we sat next to each other and worked. About 2 months ago we had a slight falling out, because she emailed me saying she would like me to be more productive and focus more on answering questions. I did admittedly overreact and answered high emotion, which was a mistake. She wasn't happy about how I handled my disagreement and neither am I, but we hashed it out and really seemed back to normal.
Finally, she did say she very much wants me to succeed in my role and seemed genuinely wanting to help me improve these concerns so that I can transition successfully to the role. That role does involve a lot of stuff I'm interested in, that someone else of a different title currently does. I set up a meeting with my boss tomorrow morning and told her I had some concerns I wanted to discuss first thing in the morning (even though tomorrow is a vacation day for me), and she is coming in early to meet with me. She asked if it was in regards to today's meeting, I said yes I have concerns about job security, and she then said her goal is to promote my growth, not demote and she hopes she can clarify.
I am seeking advice on how to bring up the offer. I am seriously considering it due to the $$$ and the tattle taling that's been happening for several months. I just don't know how to negotiate something like this. I've never been in this position before. I am a 28 year old dude with no college degree and 5 years of experience in the biotech industry...before 2014 it was all fast food.
