I have been in my current position for almost 18 months (it's my first job after graduate school), and although I have learned a lot, the work environment within my department is very toxic and challenging due to inconsistent support and micromanagement from administrators and low pay, leading to consistent staff shortages and rapid and frequent staff turnover. My job has been on break for the last 10 days, and during my break, I took a chance and applied for a slightly different position in a different department and at a different location of the same company last week, and was offered this new job on the spot (it offers more diverse opportunities for a slightly higher salary, etc). A few hours after the interview, I decided to accept the offer, and went to my current workplace (over the break) to provide a formal written letter to give to my department director requesting transferring to this new position. My supervisor does not check work e-mails or voicemails over the break, but I e-mailed her anyway over the break, for written documentation proof, to inform her of me initiating requesting the transfer position.
I received a call from my current department director that she has officially approved my request to transfer to this different position in the new department in around 5 weeks, with mutual agreement from the new department's director, and they have started actively recruiting to interview for my replacement. She also informed me that on our first work day back from break next week, she is allowing me to visit my new department for the day to complete orientation, etc (she also said she e-mailed this information to the my current supervisor, so she is aware on the first day back from break why I won't be at my current job for the day). I have a few questions regarding etiquette of telling coworkers about an internal transfer.
1) Since I will not be at my current job next week for that first day back, I am wondering if I should inform my coworkers (via text) before we return to work about my new job? Or should I allow my supervisor to inform my coworkers that day about my upcoming change in position when I am absent from the first day back? I am not sure what the proper etiquette is because my supervisor and I have not personally spoken yet regarding my new position, but since the department director has approved it, it is official (I am thinking the department director called my supervisor over break to inform her of this, since they are very close with each other).
2) Additionally, I am wondering if I should give each of my 6 coworkers a small gift of appreciation when I do leave? When multiple other people have left from my department, only 1 person has previously given departure gifts to coworkers, but they were also there almost 3 years (longer than I've been at my current job; also, my current department has 14 people in it, and I witnessed 7/14 people leave in the first 5 months of working with my current company). My coworkers and I are fairly close at work, but I do not see them outside of work. We do usually bring in food or small gifts for birthdays, etc.
3) For coworkers on other teams that I work with within my department, when should I begin telling them about my departure-should it be sometime next week too (with 3.5 weeks then until my last day), or should I wait until a week before my last day to tell them? Due to the gossiping nature of my company, I believe that some people may find out sooner than I tell them about my departure, as this frequently occurs when other people have left (due to high company turnover, etc), but I'm not sure what an appropriate time frame of notice for these people are.
If anyone has any advice to provide for these questions, I would really appreciate it!
