Applying for a job that is across the country, recommendation from a family friend. Need advice/resources.
Background: B.S. Chemistry/Comp Sci, M.S. Chemistry with microbiology One year of medical school, voluntary withdrawal. Lots of work history but none that is relevant to what I'm applying for except my current position (< 2 months)
My current position is as an QC chemist with a small company (~9 chemists total, no opportunity for advancement) so I can pay rent while looking for something more permanent and career-focused. Ultimately I would like to get into something R&D related in biochemistry or healthcare.
After talking with my wife we're both comfortable basically moving across the country.
So a friend of my uncle gave me a company name and said if I can find out who the manager is he can call and give them a personal recommendation. The jobs in this country I'm interested in are in Maine, which is about as far away from MO as you can get while staying in the country, and one I'm less interested in here in Missouri.
So I'm seeking advice on a few specific points, but broader advice is also great!
- Do I put my current position on my resume since I haven't been at it very long and my boss probably wouldn't like that I'm already looking for other work?
- How do I address the very long distance in my application? I assume I put it on my cover letter that I'm planning on relocating? What other things should I bring up since I would likely have to fly out to interview if it came to that?
- Are there any reliable services/subreddits/etc. for vetting application materials available?
