Long Interview Process Cost Me My Current Job- Advice Needed

Hi all, I’ll just jump right into it.

I applied for a job with a fairly large state university on March 6th of this year. The job was recommended by a close friend who used to work in the department I applied to, and happens to be best friends with my potential future supervisor. The supervisor and I had actually talked on the phone multiple times in a very casual setting. We aren’t “friends” but we’ve had very candid conversations. The job is incredible; a great salary, benefits, and tuition reimbursement. After hearing nothing, I decided to look for nannying jobs because I love kids and am interested in pursuing my masters degree.

On April 25, I was offered a fantastic nannying contract and I was also offered a phone interview for the position I applied for in March. I accepted the interview invitation and notified the family immediately, because I wanted to give the option to move forward without me if necessary. I didn’t want to violate my contract and risk being sued. They agreed to move forward with the caveat that if I continued to excel in the process, they would begin interviewing potential replacements. Fair enough!

The first interview was not until May 16. It went well, and I was offered a second in-person interview. I loved everything I heard during the interview, and they seemed to like me too. Toward the end of May, I was contacted again for a writing sample. At this point my friend told me it’s between myself and another candidate. I submitted my sample and hoped for the best.

Fast forward to June 13. I received a call from potential future supervisor informing me that my interview and sample brought them joy and put a smile on their faces. I called our mutual friend to share the good news and she confessed she had known for a week but was sworn to secrecy. Cool! They said they are now beginning the process of checking my references, and asked me to reach out to them. I did, and within about three days, supervisor texted me to let me know everything went great with my references and they just need my transcripts. Took care of that within twelve hours. After hearing nothing back for about a week and a half, I texted potential supervisor (we have been communicating via text) asking if there was anything additional needed from me to facilitate the process. The supervisor replied that everything seems great and to expect a call soon.

All the while, I’ve been updating my current employers as agreed upon. Well, it’s July 1st, over a week since our last contact, and I still haven’t heard anything. But my current employers informed me that they have found a replacement for me and I basically have 2 days of work left.

Out of fear, I’ve began responding to various recruiters to search for a backup position. I’ve not heard anything but positive feedback from the potential supervisor. I’ve gotten no rejection letter or email. Is it appropriate to email those involved in my interview process? It’s been nearly four months since I initially applied and I’m not sure how long HR at universities usually take to process people. If they can’t hire me immediately, that’s okay. I can file for unemployment or work as a temp while I wait, but I do not want to lose other good opportunities if there’s a chance I will not be offered this position. I’ve been losing sleep and having nightmares due to the stress and I just need to know if I have a job or not, and if so, a loose timeframe.

Edit: I should mention they just began their fiscal year today and had some very major restructuring take place this year. Could that be why this is taking so long?
