Interviewing while working

Hello!

So my current job is pretty iffy & I've been applying for jobs here and there to see what I can get.

On Monday I applied for a job an hour and a half away that looks like it pays twice what my current job does, according to Glassdoor. I figured I'd throw my resume out there and see what happens.

Yesterday he contacted me asking for a 20 minute phone interview. We have one scheduled for tomorrow at 12.

Ideally I could just go into work and excuse myself for a bit; ie drive to lunch and interview in the car/walking around a park. The problem is that I'm scheduled to help with a test and what time we start is dependent on the director of those specific tests. The director for tomorrow tends to go back and forth a lot. I've started as early as 11 and as late as 3 with her. On top of that my supervisor is super nosy. If I went to another part of the building to take the call, he'd probably end up following me (tbh it's one of the many reasons I'd like to leave), so I would definitely have to change and escape for "lunch" before they could grab me to do something. And there's really no guarantee I could do that.

I'm not sure what to do. I could call out sick, which I've never done before in my year's time here, or risk it and try to get out of the building at 12.

I don't want them to know I've been applying. They found out about another person leaving in the past and basically avoided giving him a promotion because of it. The company culture is very relaxed but I feel super guilty for calling out. I even feel guilty for applying for different places.

What do you usually do in situations like this? Should I even take the job if it would be such a long commute?
