How do I tell my boss that I want to move to another position that’s no longer under them?

I have been at my company for a little over a year now. This is my first job out of college, and I get paid well for it being my first job.

I have enjoyed learning a lot more of the technical side of things (data/reporting, business process documentation) and currently I work under essentially accounts receivable.

My boss is also remote, but her boss is in the same office as I am. Her boss has assigned me to some more responsibilities and mentioned a couple times that I could come by her office and discuss my career if I wanted to. The other day I did this and she basically gave me the rundown of a couple new projects asking what I’m interested in, and lo and behold there is a position in my office opening up under the manager of that project. It seems like basically if I want that job I can have it.

Now my question is, how do I tactfully tell my boss that I would like to move to this new position that’s not under her? The one main reason is that I don’t feel like I can move up in my current role and I feel like I need to move laterally to give myself more opportunity to grow.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
