How do I properly use my potential network?

I've been working the same job for nearly three years now, it was my first job out of college and my company mostly hires people out of college. I've made a ton of friends out of this job and hang with people regularly from this company outside of work, and I feel pretty respected around the office for the job I do. I figured this would be my network I'm building, most people don't stay in this job and obviously people who had this job and moved on found something that valued the skills from here.

I'm likely moving near the end of the year though, which means I'll be looking for a new job. I actually know two former coworkers that moved to the city I'm going to and found jobs there. I wasn't super close with them, but we were friendly and I've hung out with both outside of work, but I've barely kept in contact since they left. We have each other on social media and stuff though.

Is it weird to contact them out of the blue and just kind of ask if they have any lead on jobs in the city? Is that how people do this? Or am I just kind of a jerk that's only using them at that point?

tl;dr- Is it proper to use former coworkers I don't regularly interact with (but that like me) for potential job leads, and if so how do I ask that?
