I tried posting this on /r/freelance but for some reason Mods there decided to block me for it... Please let me know if there is a better place to post such a thing...
I have worked as an employee for most of my time out of college.
I got the opportunity for writing some code for clients on the side, and tried it out.
I find most of my time is spent on emails / phone calls back and forth with the client, working out details, rather than doing any actual technical work.
I do like the freedom of being able to choose whether or not I'd do some project in advance.
And I like how I don't have to "look busy" when I have nothing to do, like at some jobs.
But after thinking about it a bit, I've realized something:
- Unless you are working with some very specialized software, most freelance work will involve working for a small businesses that can't yet afford to hire full time employees.
- Small companies usually look for cheap work.
- To make significant money off freelancing full time, you'd need a lot of clients.
- Tracking lots of clients = Lots of communication, "go-lives", and emergencies at weird hours.
This kind of work reminded me of being a lead or manager at certain employed jobs, were I'd be responsible for lots of operations going on at once.
I generally did not like this work, because it sometimes meant I had to work outside of normal business hours to get stuff done.
If I work as a regular salaried employee, not a manager, I usually have a lot less responsibilities. Depending on lots of factors, I might actually end up getting paid more as a regular salaried employee, than as a lead / manager, even though I have less responsibilities.
As a result, it makes more sense to me to be an employee of a mid size company, rather than working with lots of small businesses.
I've been trying to understand why you would freelance instead of being hired as an employee.
I've heard arguments "It's great to be your own boss." ..but as far as I understand, all of your clients kind of become your bosses. No?
I've heard about how it's great to be able to remotely. But I have worked remotely as an employee. Generally it required me to work on site for a few years, and then ask to work remotely after I've become important in the company.
As far as I understand, the main way that freelancing can be better than being an employee is if you can work on some very specialized software, that large companies can't find an employee to work on.
What is your experience? Why do you choose to freelance instead of being an employee? Is it a choice?
