Can the credit report found in a background check affect the chances of getting hired?

I'm way behind on my credit payments and the credit card company is about to sue me. Will this interfere with my chances of getting hired. I've already had one part-time, entry-level job run a background check and have heard nothing even though the interviews went great. All they needed to do was the background check and to verify my references. That was a little over a week ago and I haven't heard a word even though they stressed during the interview that they needed someone ASAP. I used handy dandy Google to try and find an answer and was met with "poor credit reports during background checks = red flags for a company". How true is this?
