Does Anyone Here Work in Product Compliance? Any Tips for Getting the Most out of My Early Career?

I took a job about eight months ago working in the Compliance department of an electronics manufacturer. I primarily handle audits determining the REACH and RoHS etc. status of our products along with some work with regards to Conflict Minerals reporting. My position also was supposed to involve some work involving importing and exporting but this has largely taken a back seat due to some very large audits coming in. The Import export part was kind of the reason I took the job but after missing my second attempt at the customs broker exam by just a few questions (working on appealing), I would like to refocus on how I can maximize my skills in, well, what I'm actually doing right now.

I really like what I do, but I'm unsure what skills I should be working towards to continue to advance in this field. I absolutely think I could run one of these departments one day. One issue is that I came from a legal background but got spooked by the cost and nature of being a lawyer. I don't have much of an engineering background which a number of "next step" positions seem to want to have skills in.

I would love to hear about stories of those in a similar position and what your path has looked like and if there are any resources, certifications, or anything out there that you'd think would be valuable.
