Tl;dr: had a good gut feeling for Job A but it’s in a high cost area and salary doesn’t really compensate. Gut feeling was ambivalent for Job B but financial situation would be much better due to lower rent.
I’m lost in the decision between two jobs. Both are in the same field and fairly similar concerning duties and pay.
Job A:
*Felt a cultural connection (calm, no buzzwords)
*pays a little more but not enough to compensate for the high cost of living
*pays a few benefits (cheap lunch at work, massage therapist, small bonus, etc) but again not enough to compensate
*extremly difficult housing situation- it’s either 50% of my salary or 40% + commute. Employer does not add benefits for commuting (some give you a ticket for public transport)
*salaried position includes x hrs of overwork per week
*city is a metropolis (I prefer bigger cities)
I felt like I could like it there but because it’s so expensive I rejected the offer. Boss came back to me and told me I could rent an apartment for cheap from them so I can take my time finding a good apartment. But even if so, I would still have to pay a lot and might have to commute 1-2 hrs per day depending on the train.
Job B:
*somewhat of a start up culture which initially made me a bit nervous
*pays less and no benefits
*rent and cost of living is much lower (ca 25% of salary for rent)
*I can’t gauge my direct manager
*salaried position includes x+1 hrs of overwork, so more than job A
*office seems a bit nicer
*city is said to be “ugly”
I was initially a bit nervous about my direct manager and them stressing family culture in the office but I came to believe during my second interview that they actually mean it. I think I could like it at job B, also. They seem like nice people and the job is interesting.
The greatest difference is: my gut feeling for Job A was better BUT job B comes with a lower stress level since the financial and housing situation would be better. Also, I wouldn’t have to commute.
Is the better gut feeling for job A worth the high cost of living and possibly commute? I could live quite comfortably at job B. How important is that gut feeling? It’s my first real job so I really want to find something where I would do well.
Thank you for any advice.
