Success story update: 2018 Grad 48 days of unemployment, I finally for a temp to perm job as a Junior Accountant at a startup bio lab!
About me: Business major in Finance and accounting, Minor in Aeronautics, 4+ years work and intern experience from admin, contract management and supply chain. Was a child wanting to be an investment banker or a Pilot in the Air Force. Went the other route to serve in a top ROTC program, got clipped in medical. Graduated with no job and moved to ATL with no connections.
45 applications, 5 phone interviews with 2 of them ghosting, 3 on site interviews, 1 verbal offer and ghosted (f*ck that guy), and 1 offer minutes after I sent a thank you email.
None of my applications are half assed, they were full effort from tailoring a resume to writing cover letters.
My message to college students: For the love of god go bust your ass and intern every semester especially when you go to a non-target school studying underwater basket weaving. I didn't have that opportunity for my situation.
My tips for fresh grads in similar situation as I am or just did basket weaving in school.
- Have a good attitude**** (seriously, regardless of how much BS and hard it is nowadays)
- Always get a damn suit for an interview (I prefer black suit with blue shirt and blue tie)
- Have a good 30 second elevator pitch (I use it for dumb questions similar to "tell me about yourself")
- Learn how to write thank you emails (Check out Andy LaCivita)
- Research the company and HM's linkedin but use that information when necessary (try not to be too aggressive)
- Other than your prepared elevator pitch be genuine in your responses
- Respond to emails and phone calls at your earliest convenience.
