I work in the behavioral health field in a major hospital system in a union position. I’m closing in on 4 years and I’m getting recruited by former colleagues and supervisors for management positions (something I want to eventually do). So far I’ve turned down 1 offer and about to turn down another. Mostly because of the salary and loss of union benefits. Offers are only about 5% bump and not much room to negotiate. Any salary increase would get negated by loss of union benefits (i have 2 kids under 4) like summer camp funds and zero copays. I’m also about 1.25 years away from vesting into the pension ($9k/year pension if I leave after 5 years of service). I recently added an additional title and it has allowed me to do some program development which satisfies my own need for growth (and I actually enjoy the work). I like my supervisor who doesn’t micromanage and doesn’t keep track of my hours; as long as I hit my patient targets I’m left alone. I’m getting a little bit burned out but I’m fine for another 1-2 years max.
I’m fearful that after 5 (or even 6) years in the same employer, it will look like my career is stagnant. Upward mobility is nonexistent in my current hospital. I’m also concerned that my salary expectations are being skewed by the union salaries. Mid-level management positions don’t usually carry vastly higher salaries because they don’t see patients.
TLDR: Like my current union position but want to wait to leave for management roles until after I’m vested in my pension in 1.5 years. Getting many offers now for management positions with minimal salary increase (even after negotiating) and less benefits. Afraid my resume will look stagnant to wait. Also worried that no salary will be good enough to leave the union.
