I have a great job working from home as a nurse. I signed on at 20 hours/week, which they made clear was the minimum number of hours allowed. This was already more hours than I wanted at the time, but I was in debt and needed the money. My husband has been promoted twice since I started 2 years ago and he has doubled his salary. He now makes $162,000/year and his boss has eluded to the fact that he will likely be promoted again in the next year. He LOVES his job, and the only risk here is that he works at a start-up.
Our debt is now paid off except our modest home (debt pay-off was the original purpose of my employment). I have two small kids, one has multiple health issues and while she doesn't NEED me to be available 24/7 I know it would benefit her health. I made $32,000 last year. After I was hired, several of my shifts were eliminated, and given my availability I was forced to reduce my hours to 16/week. At first I was happy about this, but I have just been told that since I am technically 0.5 FTE I will have to use PTO to make up for the missing hours unless I pick up shifts. This also means if I take a lunch break on a 6 hour shift I have to use PTO to cover it, even though I am working all of my scheduled hours.
In August I asked my manager if I could be reclassified to work on an as needed basis (we have several PRN nurses). It took her nearly 4 months to tell me no, because flu season was upon us (which means we get really busy). A week after I was told no, the Director of Nursing sent out an email about how we have been abnormally slow, and detailed an elaborate process for a "Voluntary Time Off" system. This was frustrating to me because not only had I asked to reduce my scheduled hours, but hiring on "as needed" nurses allows for people to be sent home early to save money for the company as needed. In March, I discussed the issue with my manager again. In April I was told I should wait until May, and then we could discuss the possibility of reducing hours during the slow summer season and picking up again in the fall when flu season returns. I am still waiting to hear back about this.
Do I keep this job? Or are they just taking advantage of me at this point? My quality scores are consistently above 97%. I am trained on multiple lines and float back and forth as needed. I have excellent attendance, positive attitude, and get along very well with my peers. I think I stay because I haven't enjoyed being a nurse, and this is a job I am comfortable with and even enjoy. I fear that if I leave I will never return to my career, and if I do there are so few work from home jobs for nurses that aren't full time. But I feel like a complete tool at this point with how long this schedule thing has dragged on, and I worry they are just trying to see how long they can go without me quitting. Help!
