So I’m a trans guy, about a year in my transition, looking for work in Canada. I came across a job listing online for a children’s fitness gym who were looking for instructors, and amongst a large blurb describing the work, there’s one sentence that says “In the summer you’ll assist our all-female staff leading camps, classes...” I was originally gonna ignore this job, but I’m desperate, so I just applied and made sure my resume specifically stated my gender so they knew from the get-go. Anyway, they messaged me the next day and we planned an interview, which consists of me assisting one of their classes. However, I’m pretty nervous, as I have a suspicion that the employer might’ve missed that part on my resume.
I thought about bringing it up to the employer before the interview, but I don’t want to ruin my chances in case meeting me and seeing that I’m perfectly fit for the job might allow exceptions. I’m also a trans guy, and I’m by no means overly masculine or intimidating; not that that should matter, but to the employer and to the children’s parents, maybe it will. I know I’m 100% qualified for the job, as I’m a trained dancer/gymnast and I’ve taught dance classes to young children at a different studio, and I know that the employer knows this, as they contacted me for the interview.
Maybe I’m just getting too anxious. I’m just not totally sure what I should do, if I should do anything. Should I call ahead and clarify? Or should I just go to the interview and just see what happens? If they deny me the job purely based on me being a man/identifying as a man, is that even allowed?
