Pre-employment background check in the USA, wasn't asked for references?

I'm very nervous about a pre-employment background check for a job offer. I was under the impression that all US jobs do a check for your references, but there was no area in my application for the background check to provide information on previous employers or references. Do I need to contact the company separately with this information? First time working in the US. Thank you for anyone who gives a peace of mind, I understand if my nervousness sounds quite silly.
