I work security for a major city municipality. A very public building dealing with homeless people for the most part. I’ve been here for a few years. Good pay and great benefits. The only problem is, none of the security team feels safe at work. We deal with fights all the time. Over the years there has been a marked increase of violence, usually among our customers, but sometimes involving our staff as well.
All of our security team has been passing off to our upper management and union, how we do not feel safe. Lately, a number of us have been assaulted, me included, by our customers. Upper management doesn’t seem to care about our concerns. Our union seems interested and they say they will put pressure on management to make the changes we want, in order for us to feel less vulnerable and more secure while doing our jobs.
I think that the biggest problem is, upper management won’t provide us with training or equipment to handle the increasingly dangerous nature of where we work. As a result, we have trouble keeping people on board our security team, which then leaves us understaffed.
A friend told me the other day that I should seek out other jobs. It’s just not that simple as I had recently received a promotion and this schedule meshes perfectly with my daughters schedule (I’m a single father). I explained to my friend that once I put in a few years in here, in order to obtain the experience that my new position brings, I can start applying to other jobs within the city.
When I spoke to the union rep, about the situation here, he basically said that these working conditions are not ideal and that I shouldn’t have to seek other jobs simply because my employer is unwilling to provide a safe working environment.
Would anyone have any advice on how to handle my situation? It’s not that easy to just walk away. I just began to put into retirement and I now finally have health insurance for me and my daughter. I hate that I’m in this situation.
