I moved for my husband’s job where the university is the only trick in town. I cannot even get a job interview at said university.

When we moved, we were told “oh don’t worry, getting spouses employed is an unspoken part of the package.” Well, two years later, and I have yet to be considered for anything. You might ask, are you qualified for employment at a university?

  • undergrad degree with honors from a top 5 school
  • masters degree
  • PhD with full fellowship, many awards and honors upon graduating
  • I recently was awarded an award/fellowship with HUGE name recognition even for people outside of academia. I don’t want to name it for privacy reasons but it’s legit ;)

The thing is I actually have several good and competitive jobs going on. I work at a university in a major city 2.5 hours away, plus a highly competitive job in my field in the same city. These jobs are way, way more competitive than a job would be at said above university. Yet I have submitted multiple job applications (in all different ranges— I’ve offered to do administrative assistant work in the department for which I have a PhD, university administration work at the mid-level, even teaching for a children’s program associated with the university, for which i have almost a decade of experience) and I have been rejected without interview for each. I had one job that I thought could be promising and my husband’s department even put a nod in for me but my application didn’t even get through to “consideration” in HR.

The university is notorious for being hard to infiltrate job-wise but it’s getting incredibly frustrating and demoralizing that I can’t get a job interview even to do a job function well below my qualifications. The only reason I want to try to get a job here is because commuting 2.5 hours each way is really killing my soul and cutting well into the money I’m making.

What can one even do in this situation? Is it acceptable or even an option to set a meeting directly with HR? How would I even get my email answered without looking like a crazy person?

Thank you for your advice...
