Good expensive college or mediocre affordable one

Hi , I want to pursue a career in physics be it in academia or not and I want to get a PhD too , but whenever I discuss what I am going to do with my parents they always say that I am better off going to a state university instead of applying to something like Stanford or Pomona , so I just wanted to know is it worth the loan to try and go for the big universities in physics , or should I just stick to state universities
