Do I tell my supervisor I'm applying for an internal job?

Hi all,

It's been far too long, for me anyway, since I've applied for a new job. I have been working in IT as a desktop technician for the past 5 years and I'm going to go for a position as a systems administrator.

I've had a new supervisor/new management for about 9 months now when I was relocated within the company due to my old department shutting down, but honestly, supervisor is a loose term. Other than answering the question "what do you want me working on" 2-3x a week and doing my annual review once (i.e. copying my last year's one from when I was under different management and signing it), we don't really talk. He's supervising about 10 people and told me during my annual review that he's swamped, so I doubt he really gives a true hoot what I'm doing. He approves my time sheets. Most of the direction cascades down from the IT manager who I talk to even less.

Anyway, both my supervisor/manager want me to move over to the helpdesk to work full time and... I don't want to. I do 2-3 days a week there currently and I hate it. It's remedial, boring, frustrating, and my supervisor rarely engages with me. Some colleagues are strongly encouraging me to apply for this systems administrator position, and though it'd be a jump, I feel like it would be much better for my brain and my pocketbook in the long run. I feel like I'm going braindead where I currently am. From what I've learned, it looks like it's mine if I apply for it.

So the question is: Do I tell my supervisor I'm applying for the internal position, or do I just tell him (if) I get it? I think word is probably going to travel through the grapevine, worst yet it'd be really awkward if he was on the search committee for the sysadmin job (don't know if he would be). Then again, I'm afraid if I give him too much of a heads up, he's going to conspire with the manager to keep me around the helpdesk. They're desperate to have me there, and they don't care about my previous experience, they just want someone with "Good customer service skills" to help out. And at the end of the day, I guess it really isn't his business, but I don't want to piss anyone off either.

What would the proper etiquette be in this particular situation?
