What’s the deal with burning bridges? And what’s the repercussions?

I see almost everywhere, don’t do this or do that in order to not burn bridges. What are the repercussions from burning said bridges? I’m just failing to find the reason as to why I need to keep my bridges in tact, especially if I know my current company is one I’ll never go back to or use as a reference ever.
