Essentially looking for as many answers as possible, even if you had short/medium term pathways/courses to attain your current position.
I finished highschool in 2012. I have been working as a bartender ever since, but the longest I've ever worked at one place was just over 2 years from 2014 to 2016. It may seem like I can't keep a job but I have left every position I've ever had due to either being extremely overworked or underpaid, or both. I am so sick of working in hospitality.
I'm open to the idea of University but it's just a daunting prospect for me, I have no idea what I would study and I don't know where to start.
At this point in my life it's not even about what I "want" to do. I just want a job where I can go to work, do my job, and leave. A 9-5, Monday to Friday would be ideal. I've worked weekends my entire adult life and missed so many social events because of it. Even lost some friendships. I'm willing to do just about anything but I feel as if, without a degree, my options are limited to the following:
- Hospitality
- Retail
- Call centre/sales
- Real estate
Honestly, when I look on Seek/Jora/Indeed, every single job that's suggested for me is under those 3 categories.
I'm currently working in a restaurant as a bartender and I hate it. I had an interview at a Surf Club (pub) and I'm waiting for a call back, hoping to have less stress at that job for the same money but with more hours. I find myself envious of people who have desk jobs, which is ridiculous because those are apparently terrible too.
I look through Reddit and other forums daily just looking at what people do and how they got there.
Basically all I'm asking for is, what job do you have, and how did you get it?
Thank you
Edit: For the record my plan during high school was to get an electrical apprenticeship, failing that plumbing or carpentry. I don't particularly want any of those jobs but I would have been satisfied with the Monday to Friday aspect, with decent pay. I had back surgery at 18 and have to avoid repetitive/heavy lifting because of it, therefore ruling out those options. I am by no means disabled, just can't do particularly physical work. Bartending 50 hours a week in the past hasn't exactly been ideal though. I'm aware electrical work isn't particularly labour intensive but I couldn't get an apprenticeship because of it, as in nobody would take me on.
