Is lunch or a break usually included in the amount of hours you're supposed to work for salaried employees? For example, would a 40 hour work week turn into a 45 hour work week with an hr break each day?
I recently started a new job and in the agreement it says I will work 40 hours per week with one hour for lunch. Ok, no problem. The hours are 8:30am to 5:30pm. I knew it seemed like a long day, but didn't take the .75 seconds to calculate how many hours a day/week it was. I just thought ehh not a 9-5, this sucks. Especially since leaving the office at 5:30 means a lot more traffic.
But when I was talking to a friend they were the ones that said something like doesn't that mean you're working/in the office for 45 hours a week and not 40? And that got me thinking. I've worked a few other jobs before, both salaried and hourly and I'd have to say this is the first instance I've come across this where the lunch/break isn't included in the working hours for a salaried employee, even a few of my hourly positions. Is this typical?
I'd just like to add that while my job is essential to the company, there are really no instances where I would have to stay later. Also, I've already discussed leaving at 5 and taking only a half hour for lunch.
