I’ve been working as a temp for a company that works for Charter (aka Spectrum) for 3 years now. I know it’s not a good sign that these people haven’t hired me on after so long, but I need a paycheck and I haven’t been able to find another better job since I’m not qualified for much. Plus, I enjoy the work environment and the pay has been enough to get me by.
This week, however, there’s been a sudden lack of work. Tuesday around lunch time they sent me home and the following days the boss has sent out texts to everyone in the evening and mornings saying “There’s no work available, no need to come in. I’ll update you the following evening/morning.”
So there hasn’t been work for the rest of the week and I don’t know if there’ll be work Monday. When I told my brother about this he says they’re laying us off, which I don’t necessarily believe because this isn’t the first time there’s been a lack of work, but it is the second time since I started working there, with the first time being around the holidays.
I was already looking for a job back then but then I got trained and put into the department I was asking for. I was hoping to prove myself in the new department and get hired on but this sudden lack of work in the middle of Spring has gotten me concerned again.
I’d hate for all this time working for the company to lead to nowhere but as time goes on the job seems a bit more unstable.
Anyways, my main question is: Are these huge red flags? Do I need to jump ship asap? Or should I stay on and hope to get hired eventually?
TL;DR - Company has had a sudden lack of work twice in half a year. I’ve also been a temp for 3 years. How huge are these red flags?
