Is it ethical to ask why someone was laid off?

So I was off laid 3 weeks ago from a job where I was underpaid and got a NEW job making 10K more a year (just for the backstory).

Second day at work and I find out from a coworker that the guy who was sitting at my place was laid off after working there for 3 years, other guy quit - so they are filling 2 positions. Most employees in the company have worked there for 20-30 years, it’s like 60-70 people company, so pretty small tight-knit team.

Is that OK to ask something along the lines a Director of Operations:

“Hey (name) do you have a minute to chat? I was wondering who is (name), his name is on the phone on my desk, why is he no longer working here (act very surprised hearing about lay off) ... oh really why was he laid off?”

It’s important to me that I stay at this job for at least another 8-12 month (immigration purposes). And now I am a bit anxious about the lay off thing after previous experience.

I am on a probation period and it’s a time for a company / me to find out if we are a fit, so is that an OKish question to ask?

Thanks
