Backdrop here: I started at a manufacturing gig 6 months ago. I run a machine press, not flashy but definitely pays the bills. The presses where I work require several months of training to accurately and efficiently produce parts. I’m a very quick learner, trained quickly, and was hired on full-time well before the “standard 90-days”. At 6 months I am currently one of the top producers on my division of presses.
The other day a posting for a maintenance gig within the same plant came up. (Not taking out the trash and changing light bulbs maintenance, but repairing and maintaining machines) Pay- Scale is much much higher. I applied and have an interview on Wednesday.
The lead in my area is extremely cool, we get along very well. I told him that I had applied and am getting an interview. He wished me the best of luck and that it’d be good for me and my family, but told me not to get my hopes up because our division of management will likely block my move because I’m valuable to my area.
Is there any recourse that would help me in this situation or is this a standard thing? I have found that this has happened to quite a few people.
TL;DR - Applied for a new higher paying position within the same company and could potentially be blocked from moving by current managers because I am a top producer in my current position.
