Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if this belongs here, but heres a little background.
I live in the state of Texas, USA and I am graduating come December with a degree in biochemistry with a lot of experience(for an undergrad) in cancer biology, fermentation scale-up/optimization, novel phage discovery, and a bit of protein chemistry. I'm currently applying for internships/Co-ops everywhere(mostly out of state) and I have gotten interviews with some places and that's good. But until I can seal the deal, I dont think I can/should be celebrating.
As most people, I've been looking towards the future and I feel like because of the lack of industry in Texas, my career growth will be very limited. However, the biotech/biopharma industry IS growing in Houston, but it will take time and unfortunately will only have its foundation laid with Lonza in the area now. I am rather firm about wanting to work first before I ultimately decide if I want to pursue graduate school or not. I need time to decide if I really enjoy what I'm doing and not just do grad school because it's the next step.
I know it's easier for companies to hire locals because of various reasons, so I know I am at a disadvantage automatically. Unfortunately, the Biotech/Biopharma industries tend to be unequally distributed across the country and are in rather high COL areas. This industry requires universities and a financial district for it to blossom. Because of the high COL, I know it wouldn't be smart to simply pack my bags and move, especially with having no money saved.
Essentially, I am unsure of what my course of action should be. Please feel free to chime in and give any advice you think would be helpful, even if you are in a different industry.
*Just to clarify, when I say graduate school, I do not mean medical, pharmacy, dental etc schools.
Thanks.
