What do you think about listing projects under 'Work Experience' for online applications?

I don't have relevant work experience but my resume details several projects and "free work" I've done helping clients.

Would it be OK to fill in the 'Work Experience' fields with the relevant projects even though I wasn't employed? I'm only thinking of doing this because I'm concerned if I leave these fields blank, the system will auto-reject me even though I do have relevant experience for the job.
