I’m 18 years old. Two of my family members are 20+ years employees of a local law enforcement agency and they are well known within their co-workers.
I applied for a civilian position as a security guard there around 5 months ago. I processed multiple background checks, a phone interview, and submitted a resume (all of this was not in person).
That was a few months ago which is a typical amount of time to schedule an interview for some government positions. I arrived this morning wearing a black dress shirt, black slacks, black dress shoes, and a patterned grey tie. I also made copies of my cover letter to hand to the panel that was interviewing me.
There was only one other applicant that arrived with me, they entered the room and was finished within 15 minutes. I entered the room and was introduced to the panel. I then asked them if they would like a copy of my cover letter, and handed them each a packet.
Two members of the panel were law enforcement officers while the third was a civilian HR representative. The HR representative read me questions off a single double sided sheet of paper. I gave them fleshed our answers. One of the officers notified me that there are actually two positions that they are hiring for and asked me which one I would prefer.
Either of the positions were a great opportunity for myself, especially at my age. I told them that I would accept either position that fit their needs the best. They asked me if I had any questions, I had none. Neither of them had any. I got up and shook their hands and thanked them for their time. The HR rep seemed happy and said they would contact me next week.
A few hours ago I sent a thank you email stating that I was humbled to attend the interview and excited for the opportunity to serve my community.
Any thoughts? They did seem surprised that I had printed out my cover letter, and that I came well dressed.
